When doing bridal makeup I don’t always have time to capture photos of the makeup myself. Also the photographer has a lot more to think about than to get me good makeup photos! Therefore sometimes its good practice and fun for me to do my own Bridal shoot! I do the hair and makeup and take the photo’s myself. Having touched on beauty photography techniques whilst studying makeup at university I do my best to capture the quality of the skin and facial features.
Model and Styling
On wednesday 27th July 2016 I asked a friend of mine from Aylesbury who regularly comes to get her eyelashes extended with me to model for the shoot. Having my model being a lash client already was ideal to show other brides how amazing eyelash extensions look on a bride. They add something extra special to your look rather than your day to day mascara, they also aren’t heavy and temperamental like some strip lashes can be when worn on your wedding day.
Rather than have a strict formal shoot we went for a relaxed bridal look with a summer/ bohemian bridal style. My model had also not long come back off holiday so had a gorgeous natural tan which supported the ‘summer bride’ look.
Makeup and Hair
The model chosen had long hair with two tones faded into each other often referred to as ‘balayage’ or ‘ombre’- two hair colour trends , therefore to add soft loose curls really evened out the tones in the hair and gave a ‘beachy’ bridal look. I used a thick curling wand which gave the result of larger, bouncy curls rather than small tight ones. I chose to leave the hair down as this was a relaxed bridal shoot and I wanted the hair and makeup to reflect that.
For the makeup I still wanted it to show classic bridal glam but with a dewy blushed glow! When doing bridal makeup I rarely do maximum coverage unless requested by the Bride herself. I like to apply the makeup so it looks like the brides natural complexion, if only we could all have naturally flawless skin! The foundation is there to cover any tiny blemishes, reduce redness or discolouration in the skin, to give the bride a flawless complexion as if it was her own.
When doing bridal makeup I use bronzer, blusher and highlighter to add depth back into the skin. I do this by bringing out the healthy colour in the cheeks with blusher and lifting the cheekbone with highlighters that give that ‘bridal glow’. Subtle bronzer is great to define the contours of the face (cheek bones, forehead, nose and chin) softly slimming and defining the features on the face.
From a side angle you can see how gorgeous the eyelash extensions look with the rest of the makeup. They are soft yet open up the eyes and stand out among the rest of the eye makeup. Another great reason to have extensions on your wedding day is that they won’t be going anywhere! Tears, heat- you name it nothing will budge them and you can enjoy them for your whole ‘wedding week’ of celebrations. Many brides feel the comfort of having them on when they are makeup free when the wedding photographer is around taking pictures.
Final Photo Reel!
Below is a gallery of the best shots I took from the shoot. The first one is completely un retouched and the others had lighting adjustments. All show the makeup, hair and lashes well. I had such fun doing this shoot and thats how it should be on your wedding day, constant smiles and fun!
